He also suffered from clinical depression along with his wife, both of whom had severe symptoms during the war era. That alone, in my opinion, is what made him such a great man. He was able to accomplish great things, e.g. freeing the slaves and winning a war, all the time while he himself was under the slavery to his own severe symptoms of depression. At that time, they did not have the advantages of psychiatry or medication. So Lincoln had to forge his own way. He kept journals and disciplined himself to write at least one positive thought at the end of every day. He also used the war as a distraction tool, so that he would not be so entrapped in his own dark thoughts. He figured that by doing good for others, he might lessen his own pain. And most of all, even during his darkest hours, he never, ever, gave up.
