http://www.africanviews.org/country-profile-videos/viewvideo/14682/kyrgyzstan/culture-of-the-uyghurs-part-1

IntroductionThe Uyghurs are the native people of East Turkestan, also known as Sinkiang or Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The latest Chinese census gives the present population of the Uyghurs estimate according to Chinese official statement 8,345,622 million. But the Uyghurs estimate themselves more than 20 millions. There are also 500,000 Uyghurs in West Turkestan mostly known as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan . Almost 75,000 Uyghurs have their homes in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Europe and the United States. The Chinese sources indicate that the Uyghurs are the direct descendants of the Huns.Ancient Greek, Iranian, and Chinese sources placed Uyghurs with their tribes, and sub-tribes in the vast area between the west banks of the Yellow River in the east, Eastern Turkestan in the west, and in the Mongolian steppe in the northeast as early as 300 B.C..Early HistoryUyghur EmpireAfter the fall of the Kokturk Empire in Central Asia, the Uyghurs established their true state Uyghur empire in 744, with the city of Karabalgasun, on the banks of the Orkhun River, as its capital. After the death of Baga Tarkan in 789 and specially after that of his successor, Kulug Bilge Khagan in 790, Uyghur power and prestige declined. The Ganzhou Uyghur KingdomThe Kanchou (Ganzhou) Uyghur Kingdom, which was established in today's Gansu province of China, in 850. Several thousand of these Uyghurs still live in the Kansu (Gansu) area under the name yellow Uyghurs or Yugurs, preserving their old Uyghur mother tongue and their ancient Yellow sect of Lamaist Buddhism. The Karakhoja Uyghur KingdomThe Uyghurs living in the northern part of Khan Tengri (Tianshan Mountains) in East Turkestan established the Karakhoja Uyghur Kingdom (Qocho) near the present day city of Turfan (Turpan), in 846. The Karakhanid Uyghur KingdomThe Uyghurs living in the southern part of Khan Tengri, established the Karakhanid Uyghur Kingdom in 840 with the support of other Turkic clans like the Karluks, Turgish and the Basmils, with Kashgar as its capital. In 934, during the rule of Satuk Bughra Khan, the Karakhanids embraced Islam 19 . Thus, in the territory of East Turkestan two Uyghur kingdoms were set up: the Karakhanid, who were Muslims, and the Karakhojas, who were Buddhists. In 1397 this Islamic and Buddhist Uyghur Kingdoms merged into one state and maintained their independence until 1759.Manchu InvasionThe Manchus who set up a huge empire in China, invaded the Uyghur Kingdom of East Turkestan in 1759 and dominated it until 1862. In 1863, the Uyghurs were successful in expelling the Manchus from their motherland, and founded an independent kingdom in 1864. The money for the Manchu invasion was granted by the British Banks. After this invasion, East Turkestan was given the name Xinjiang which means "new territory" or "New Dominion" and it was annexed into the territory of the Manchu empire on November 18,1884.Chinese communist ruleIn 1911, the Nationalist Chinese, overthrew Manchu rule and established a republic. Twice, in 1933 and 1944, the Uyghurs were successful in setting up an independent East Turkestan Republic. But these independent republics were overthrown by the military intervention and political intrigues of the Soviet Union. It was in fact the Soviet Union that proved deterrent to the Uyghur independence movement during this period. In 1949 Nationalist Chinese were defeated by the Chinese Communists. After that, Uyghurs fell under Chinese Communist rule.Uyghur CivilizationAt the end of the 19th and the first few decades of the 20th century, scientific and archaeological expeditions to the region along the Silk Road in East Turkestan led to the discovery of numerous Uyghur cave temples, monastery ruins, wall paintings, statues, frescoes, valuable manuscripts, documents and books. Members of the expedition from Great Britain, Sweden, Russia, Germany, France, Japan, and the United States were amazed by the treasure they found there, and soon detailed reports captured the attention on an interested public around the world. The relics of these rich Uyghur cultural remnants brought back by Sven Hedin of Sweden, Aurel Stein of Great Britain, Gruen Wedel and Albert von Lecoq from Germany, Paul Pelliot of France, Langdon Warner of the United States, and Count Ottani from Japan can be seen in the Museums of Berlin, London, Paris, Tokyo, Leningrad and even in the Museum of Central Asian Antiquities in New Delhi. The manuscripts, documents and the books discovered in Eastern Turkestan proved that the Uyghurs had a very high degree of civilization. This Uyghur power, prestige and civilization which dominated Central Asia for more than a thousand years went into a steep decline after the Manchu invasion of East Turkestan, and during the rule of the Nationalist and specially during the rule of the Communist Chinese.

Polo's still played with a freshly killed goat and the men still marry their women the old-fashioned way: by abducting them off the street and forcing them to be their wife. Bride kidnapping is a supposedly ancient custom that's made a major comeback since the fall of Communism and now accounts for nearly half of all marriages in some parts. We traveled to the Kyrgyz countryside to follow/aid and abet a young groom named Kubanti as he surprised his teenage girlfriend Nazgul with the gift of marriage/kidnapping.Subscribe to VICE on YouTube to stay updated on our daily releases: http://youtube.com/VICEVideos, daily editorial and more: http://vice.comLike VICE on Facebook: http://fb.com/VICEFollow Noisey on Twitter: http://twitter.com/VICERead our tumblr: http://vicemag.tumblr.com

The sculpture depicts the Buddha sitting in the lotus position, and is 1.5 meters high. The site is thought to be the remains of a Buddhist monastery complex.Archeologists in Kyrgyzstan have unearthed a large Buddha statue, in the hills outside the capital Bishkek. Archaeologists from the Kyrgyz Academy of Sciences, working with colleagues from the Russian Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, were digging at a site thought to be the remains of a Buddhist monastery complex. The newly discovered Buddha statue is 1.5 meters tall (almost 5 feet), and depicts the Buddha sitting in the lotus position. [Valery Kolchenko, Archaeologist, Kyrgyz National Academy of Sciences]:"This sculpture is as high as two humans. If we could straighten it out and put it vertically, its height would be about four meters, as it is sitting, it's about one-and-a-half to two meters (high)."The Buddha statue is believed to date back to a time between the 8th to 10th century. [Asan Torgoyev, Scientist, Oriental Studies Department of the Hermitage]:"The excavation of this sculpture is a very laborious task, that is why we cannot date this artifact to any particular time. First of all we need to excavate it and then we can say how old it is. Currently we can date the monastery to a period from the 8th to 10th century."Finding Buddhist remains of this kind is rare in the mountainous regions of Kyrgyzstan. Pre-Islamic Buddhist culture is well documented further south in Tajikistan, but very unusual in its northern neighbour, Kyrgyzstan. Locals are accustomed to the excavations, knowing very well that their farm land is in a rich archeological area. [Zulpihar Aliyev, Local Cattle Herder]:"As children we collected iron things, a lot of coins, bronze and copper items here. Almost 50 years have passed since then." In earlier excavations at the same site near the village of Krasnaya Rechka, archaeologists have discovered remains of a Buddhist temple, a fortress, a Karakhanid palace complex, and Buddhist as well as early Christian cemeteries.

This video is about ethnic Kyrgyz people living in Kizilisu Kirgiz Autonomous Perfecture, China. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Kirgiz Ethnic Minority is the 31st Ethnic Minority Group in China, being granted Minority Status in the 1950's AD. The members of the Kirgiz Ethnic Minority of China nearly all live in Xinjiang-Uygur Autonomous Region in West China. The majority, some 80% reside near Artux in the 72,500 square kilometer (27,992 square miles) Kizilsu (Kesilesu ; Chinese: ) Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture, which located on the Kyrgyzstan Border in the Tian Shan Mountain Range of West Xinjiang-Uygur Autonomous Region of China.Other groups are found in the area West of Kashgar, in Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County South of Kashgar, and West of Urumqi near the city of Jinghe' on the Manas Lake. Manas lake was made famous by Kirgiz Folk Songs about its beauties. The rest live in the neighboring Wushi (Uqturpan), in the area of Aksu City, around Shache (Yarkant), in Yingisarand Pishan (Guma), and in Tekes, Zhaosu (Monggolkure), Emin (Dorbiljin), Bole (Bortala) and Gonliu in northern Xinjiang. Far away from all other Kirgiz Ethnic Communities in China, several 10 thousands of Kirgiz whose forefathers emigrated to Northeast China more than 200 years ago now live in Wujiazi Village in Fuyu County of Heilongjiang Province. The number of Kirgiz in China was counted at 70 thousand 115 in 1964 AD, 113 thousand 866 in 1982 AD, 141 thousand 549 in 1990, and was last measured at 160 thousand and 800 in the year 2000 AD National Census. The Kirgiz are mainly engaged in animal husbandry, being pastoral people. Their lifestyle is semi-nomadic, as their animals move to greener pastures with the seasons. In Summer the Kirgiz live on the plains near rivers and in winter they move to mountain slopes with a sunny exposure. A minority fraction of the Kirgiz , currently some 15% of the population engages in agriculture only.Source: http://www.drben.net/ChinaReport/Sources/Art_Arts_Culture/Ethnic_Minorities_in_China/Islamic/Kirgiz/Kirgiz_Kyrgyz-Ethnic_Minority.html

The Kyrgyz (also spelled Kirgiz, Kirghiz) are a Turkic people living primarily in Kyrgyzstan. The Kyrgyz state reached its greatest expansion after defeating the Uyghur Khaganate in 840 AD, in alliance with the Chinese Tang dynasty. The Kirghiz Khagans of the Yenisei Kirghiz Khaganate claimed descent from the Han Chinese general Li Ling (Han Dynasty), which was mentioned in the diplomatic correspondence between the Kirghiz Khagan and the Tang Dynasty Emperor, since the Tang Imperial Li family claimed descent from Li Ling's grandfather, Li Guang. The Kirghiz Qaghan assisted the Tang dynasty in destroying the Uyghur Khaganate and rescuing the Taihe princess from the Uyghurs. They also killed a Uyghur Khagan in the process. Then Kyrgyz quickly moved as far as the Tian Shan range and maintained their dominance over this territory for about 200 years. In the 12th century, however, the Kyrgyz domination had shrunk to the Altai Range and the Sayan Mountains as a result of the rising Mongol expansion. With the rise of the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, the Kyrgyz migrated south. In 1207, after the establishment of Yekhe Mongol Ulus (Mongol empire), Genghis Khan's oldest son Jochi occupied Kyrgyzstan without resistance. They remained a Mongol vassal until the late 14th century.Various Turkic peoples ruled them until 1685, when they came under the control of the Oirats (Dzungars).

The theater is directed by film director Shamil Djaparov. The aim of the theater is to retain, develop, and popularize Kyrgyz folk heritage around theworld. The originality of the Theater lies in the fact that the members perception of folklore is notsimple enthusiasm, but a deep study of the spiritual culture of the Kyrgyz people. Meeting with thebearers of folk traditions, the artists of the Theater have managed to recreate the ancient dancesBakshyBiy and ShyrdakBiy, which were forgotten until recently.Ordo Sakhna has gathered an exclusive collection of ancient traditional melodies and dastans(small epos), which came to us through centuries of generations. Through careful searching andexperiments the musicians adapted the ancient heritage to modern society. The artists have considered every aspect of the songs and dances: detailed recreations oftraditional costumes, mannerisms of motion and symbolism of gestures. With the aid of thesefactors they have succeeded in recreating a realistic and honest ethnographical picture of Kyrgyzculture.

As I'm sure youve noticed, there is nothing bisexual about this video. This instead refers to what will attract certain sexes to this video. For FEMALES, there is the sight of wolfy in a state of undress (albeit under the covers), and the comforting sight of myself not in such a state. For MALES, at least those not of the homosexual persuasion, but for those who like jokes about vomit and out of date food (YES!!! ALL THREE OF YOU!!!) theres mainly me showing off our food haul and explaining our day. Truely a landmark in youtube history.

http://www.africanviews.org/country-profile-videos/viewvideo/14667/kyrgyzstan/culture-of-the-uyghurs-part-4

In many American minds this is Kazakhstan (video). I am going to show you the real Kazakhstan with its history, culture, great nature, and amazing architecture.Kazakhstan is a country in the heart of Eurasia. It's bordered by Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. It's the ninth largest territory in the world and the world's largest landlocked country with many different types of nature. Kazakhstan has a vast flat steppe extending from the Volga in the west to the Altai Mountains in the east and from the plains of western Siberia in the north to oases and deserts of Central Asia in the south.Kazakhstan's history goes back thousands of years; I will give you a brief overview. The indigenous Kazakhs were a nomadic Turkic people who belonged to several divisions of Kazakh hordes. Their tribes fell under Mongol rule in the 13th century and they were dominated by Tartar khanates until the area was conquered by Russia in the 18th century.During the USSR Kazakhstan became agricultural and industrial center. The Soviet Union built the largest space center in the world called Baikonur in Central Kazakhstan, where the first man in space Yuri Gagarin was launched from.Kazakhstan obtained its independence from the collapsing Soviet Union in 1991 and proclaimed its membership in the Commonwealth of Independent States. Now that you have gotten a brief history of Kazakhstan, let us move on to its interesting and rich culture. As nomads Kazakhs lived in yurts, the portable, felt-covered, wood lattice-framed domes. This made it easy for them to pack up and move to the next grassland with their pasture. Many Kazakhs are still living the way they lived a thousand years ago, though, many have adopted the modern technology with things such as solar panels, air conditioners, satellites and so on.The nomads' pasture consisted of horses and sheep, animals that are easily moved. This is why Kazakh's diet and dishes were based on horse and sheep milk and meat.Music is very important in Kazakh society. Their main musical instrument is a Dombra, a two stringed instrument, which is used by most of the Kazakhs and is still used in modern popular music. (VIDEO)Religion plays an important role in the everyday life of many Kazakhs. Although Kazakhstan has freedom of religion, this country is regarded as an Islamic country. 70% of Kazakhstan is Sunni Muslim with the rest being mostly Orthodox Christian and atheists.Kazakhstan is also a very wealthy country with many ancient structures alongside with modern architectural marvels.Starting with the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, which was built in 1405, and the ancient city of Turkestan, Kazakhstan developed into a modern nation with new architecture and modern lifestyle. Today's new capital of Kazakhstan Astana is one of the newest cities in the world with amazing different styles of architecture. Astana is undergoing a transformation costing billions of dollars, where top international architects assist in trying to make Astana a worthy capital - not only of Kazakhstan but also of all Central Asia. (VIDEO)As you can see, the real Kazakhstan is completely different from Borat's Kazakhstan. After looking at its nature, culture, history and sights, I cannot understand why Kazakhstan is so poorly known in the world. Borat definitely made a commercial for Kazakhstan and made it more famous, but he gave a wrong idea about it.Real Kazakhstan is a multicultural country where different nationalities live together peacefully. The people of Kazakhstan are always warm and welcoming.VIDEO: "Kazakhstan... Ever wondered?"

It is also both fascinating and modern. Nairobi is the countrys most important and beautiful city and with the finest temperate climate between Johannesburg and Cairo, is located at an altitude of almost 1,700 metres above sea level. The government district of City Square contains the Conference Centre and the Kanu Tower, the headquarters of government and the citys tallest building.Canons guard the main entrance to the National Museum that is situated on Museum Hill, a fascinating building that covers much of Kenyas culture and history. The museum provides an interesting insight into Pre-history as well as to various cultures and the countrys flora and fauna.Directly in front of the city gates is the Nairobi National Park, the oldest of all Kenyas nature parks. Groups of ostriches can be seen bathing in the hot sand. A number of springboks stroll around elegantly between scattered rocks and trees that have been uprooted by elephants close to the citys skyline.Nairobi is a metropolis in the 'Realm of the Golden Sun' and is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating cities in the world.

It is emerging that Kenyan's have taken a back seat in appreciating their history. Even with the strategic location and conspicuous nature of the building that houses her history, Kenya National Archives cannot boast of its rich content ready for the public to view and learn from. Many Kenyans pass by the building on a daily basis without so much a thought to what the archive stores. And save for the storing of records for posterity, the Kenya National Archives may just be another building in the city. Full of untapped information that the vast majority is not aware of.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBIivmWFh3g On January 21st, 2009, his very first day in office, Barack Obama implemented and signed into law Executive Order 13489.For those of you who can't take the time to read it. here is the section that applies:"Sec.2Notice Of Intent To Disclose Presidential RecordsWhen the Archivist provides notice to the incumbent and former Presidents of his intent to disclose Presidential records pursuant to section 1270.46 of the NARA regulations, the Archivist, using any guidelines providied by the incumbent and former Presidents, shall identify any specific materials, the disclosure of which he believes may raise a substantial question of executive privilege."Now for all of you who commented on our previous articles that we were no more that right-wing nut jobs, that this thing about Obama's birth certificate was a non-issue, and those of you who tried to shift the focus of the stories, doesn't this strike you as just a little odd? That the first order of business Obama took care of on day one of his Presidency was to sign off on an Executive Order that states that only the records he chooses to be made public will be released? This is the subject that was at the absolute top of his agenda? If this isn't proof that Obama is hiding something, I don't know what is.http://www.infowars.com/obama-signs-executive-order-barring-release-of-his-birth-certificate/
