On May 19, I have attended the lecture on Women, Food Security, and Peace building in Africa at the IPI building in NYC and would love to share the merits with those who are possibly interested in those topics.

There were three panelists, representing Uganda, South Sudan and an NGO from the Netherlands, working in various African countries.
Few issues have come up strongly cross-borders:
One, that women are the major providers of food in lots of African countries (working in agriculture and placing the food on the table).
Second is the domestic violence against women.
And the third, and possibly the most important one, from the Conflict Resolution perspective is the lack of property ownership by women. Even in countries where the rights are regulated by the governments, entitling women the legal rights to properties, the customary laws trump the regulations, leaving women and often numbers of children without any resources, causing domestic violence, also on a family level.
As policy prescriptions, the most emphasized tool for helping women was bringing their literacy into a higher level, so they can better understand their own rights. As far as executing the education programs, among other difficulties is the lack of teachers (often the student/teacher ratio is 1:1000).
Another one was a program undertaken in Uganda, focusing on creating women- leaders who will mobilize the women’s community.
There was one woman in the audience, who had spoken with huge passion about the hopeless position of African women.
None of this might be particularly reviling or surprising to some of us but it is important to keep this in our minds as will think of Africa.

leather production facility-Ethiopia Tannery Share Company.”This facility run by Pittards is located by Lake Koka, openly discharging chemical wastes into the Lake. Chemical waste from the tannery has poisoned Lake Koka and the Awash River, destroying the ecosystem. The once-pristine lake is now filled with toxic green algae (microcrystal algae). And the toxins have spread: A scientific study conducted to determine the concentrations of heavy metals in the extract from watermelon grown around Lake Koka found alarmingly high concentrations of chromium, iron, nickel and lead.
