In the aftermath of Chuck Turner=
=92s overdue expulsion from
the ranks of public servants, questions sti=
ll linger regarding
those whose support of him is unyielding and those =
whose
avoidance of him is unseemly.

There=92s a temptation to conclude his supporte=
rs are sicker than he is,
decrying the manner in which his g=
uilt was established, as
if the way you catch a crook makes him any les=
s of a crook.

Then again, maybe it=92s easier for them to remain in denial
than to a=
dmit they really didn=92t know a man they long admired.
It=92s worse th=
an feeling betrayed; you can feel a little foolish, too.

Early in the O.J. Simpson case, when initial hints of his possible
cul=
pability began to surface,
fans were reluctant to accept them.

=93I can understand them being shocked,=94 Harry Sinden, then
presiden=
t of the Bruins [team
stats], observed =
in the summer of 1994. =93I=92m shocked, too.
What happens is, we feel =
somewhat close to a personality like
O.J., as we do to a lot of enterta=
iners. Then when
something like this takes place it makes us wonder, =91=
How could
I have been so wrong?=92 We don=92t want to believe we might =

have misjudged.=94

Anyone who regarded Chuck Turner as a pillar of the
community obviousl=
y misjudged the man.
Unlike th=
ose *pornographic pictures he once used to scurrilously
allege Iraqi wo=
men were being raped by American soldiers, the
video that showed him ac=
cepting a bribe was unassailably
accurate.

But, as the old saw reminds us, there are none so blind as those
that =
will not see, so Chuck=92s small band of deceived diehards will
go on d=
iscrediting themselves and annoying the rest of us,
refusing to let the =
facts alter their obstinate opinions.

Fine. Unlike bribery, buffoonery is not against the law.

The other group whose reaction is puzzling is the black clergy of
this=
city, so quick to call a press conference whenever it perceives
its pe=
ople have been poorly served.

So why is their silence so deafening now?

Surely they understand that by saying nothing, they=92re still sending a message, not only to their community, especially impressionable kids, but also to the world abutting its borders, where readers and viewers wonder how a felonious politician can escape chastisement.

Turner=92s conduct is the easiest of all to understand. Plain and simple, =

he=92s corrupt, a total fraud.

But the reactions of those who had a right to expect more, and those
w=
ho have a responsibility to demand more, are much harder to fathom.

This is not a proud moment for any of them.

Strong earthquake hits
south-west Pakistan

An earthquake of magnitude 7.4 has hit south-west=
ern Pakistan, in a desert area bordering Iran and Afghanistan, the US Geolo=
gical Survey says.

The quake struck at a depth of just 10km (6.2 miles) at 0123 on Wednesda=
y (2023 GMT on Tuesday), some 55 km (34 miles) west of Dalbandin in Pakista=
n.

It was located several hundred kilometres from the Pakistani city of Que=
tta and the city of Zahedan, Iran.

The 7.6-magnitude Kashmir earthquake of October 2005 killed 73,000 peopl=
e.

The area hit by the recent earthquake is sparsely populated and is locat=
ed in a seismically active zone.

The Pakistani province of Baluchistan is a focus of some militant activi=
ty, sharing a long and porous border with conflict zones in southern Afghan=
istan.

No immediate details of any damage were available, but reports said the =
quake was felt in neighbouring provinces.

Pakistan is still dealing with the aftermath of devastating floods in th=
e 2010 monsoon season, as well as battling Taliban militants in several tri=
bal areas.

The historic city of Bam, west of the latest epicentre inside Iran, was =
devastated by an earthquake in 2003.

In the aftermath of Chuck Turner=
=92s overdue expulsion from
the ranks of public servants, questions sti=
ll linger regarding
those whose support of him is unyielding and those =
whose
avoidance of him is unseemly.

There=92s a temptation to conclude his supporte=
rs are sicker than he is,
decrying the manner in which his g=
uilt was established, as
if the way you catch a crook makes him any les=
s of a crook.

Then again, maybe it=92s easier for them to remain in denial
than to a=
dmit they really didn=92t know a man they long admired.
It=92s worse th=
an feeling betrayed; you can feel a little foolish, too.

Early in the O.J. Simpson case, when initial hints of his possible
cul=
pability began to surface,
fans were reluctant to accept them.

=93I can understand them being shocked,=94 Harry Sinden, then
presiden=
t of the Bruins [team
stats], observed =
in the summer of 1994. =93I=92m shocked, too.
What happens is, we feel =
somewhat close to a personality like
O.J., as we do to a lot of enterta=
iners. Then when
something like this takes place it makes us wonder, =91=

I have been so wrong?=92 We don=92t want to believe we might =

have misjudged.=94

Anyone who regarded Chuck Turner as a pillar of the
community obviousl=
y misjudged the man.
Unlike th=
ose *pornographic pictures he once used to scurrilously
allege Iraqi wo=
men were being raped by American soldiers, the
video that showed him ac=
cepting a bribe was unassailably
accurate.

But, as the old saw reminds us, there are none so blind as those
that =
will not see, so Chuck=92s small band of deceived diehards will
go on d=
iscrediting themselves and annoying the rest of us,
refusing to let the =
facts alter their obstinate opinions.

Fine. Unlike bribery, buffoonery is not against the law.

The other group whose reaction is puzzling is the black clergy of
this=
city, so quick to call a press conference whenever it perceives
its pe=
ople have been poorly served.

So why is their silence so deafening now?

Surely they understand that by saying nothing, they=92re still sending a message, not only to their community, especially impressionable kids, but also to the world abutting its borders, where readers and viewers wonder how a felonious politician can escape chastisement.

Turner=92s conduct is the easiest of all to understand. Plain and simple, =

he=92s corrupt, a total fraud.

But the reactions of those who had a right to expect more, and those
w=
ho have a responsibility to demand more, are much harder to fathom.

This is not a proud moment for any of them.
